The AI Email Revolution: Smart, Fast, but Missing the Human Touch, by Jen Shelby. The Artificial (Un)Intellience Conference
The AI Email Revolution

I recently came across The Washington Post article, We Asked 5 AI Helpers to Write Tough Emails. One Was a Clear Winner. It got me thinking—are AI-generated emails effective, and where do these tools still fall short?  According to a March 2024 Statista survey, 15% of U.S. internet users already use AI to draft emails, while 25% are open to trying it.

At its core, AI text generation relies on Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Machine Learning (ML) to produce human-like text. Because these models are trained on massive datasets, they often default to generic professional phrases which we all cringe at—hence the ever-present, "I hope this email finds you well." While polite,it comes across as impersonal and formulaic.

AI writing assistants offer undeniable benefits. They speed up communication, boost productivity, and help marketers generate SEO-friendly content, ad copy, and chatbot responses. Future AI-driven email clients may even adjust tone dynamically to enhance engagement.

Should you rely on AI Email assistants?

However, AI text generation tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Co-Pilot have several limitations that I think most of us have experienced. These tools don’t understand language the way humans do; they generate text based on patterns. As a result, they sometimes produce misinformation, struggle with long-term context, and lack true creativity. Bias in training data can also shape responses, and over-censorship might limit nuance. While AI can draft, refine, and streamline, it often lacks the emotional intelligence and strategic depth required for truly persuasive communication.

So, should you rely on AI for email writing? It depends. For routine emails, AI can be a time-saver. But for nuanced or high-stakes communication, human oversight remains essential. As AI evolves, the key challenge will be balancing efficiency with authenticity.
