Watch the Official PyTorch Documentary

In May 2024, the PyTorch Foundation unveiled the documentary Powering the AI Revolution. This milestone project memorializes and documents the journey behind PyTorch, a machine learning library based on the Torch library. The film follows the history, and the contributors who have driven the project forward. The documentary is a tribute to the collective efforts that have shaped one of the most widely adopted open-source machine-learning frameworks.

From its beginnings at Meta to becoming a cornerstone of AI research and development, PyTorch has consistently driven innovation in machine learning. The documentary highlights the dedication and passion of our community—from the early contributors who laid the groundwork to the researchers and developers who continue to expand the boundaries of AI today. It captures the real-world impact of PyTorch, showcasing its role in enabling breakthroughs in industries ranging from healthcare to autonomous systems.

PyTorch has powered cutting-edge technologies such as Tesla’s Autopilot, Meta’s LLaMA models, Hugging Face’s Transformers, DeepMind’s AlphaFold, and OpenAI’s DALL·E. These innovations have transformed fields such as autonomous driving, natural language processing, protein folding prediction, and AI-generated imagery. If we did not have PyTorch, we wouldn't have ChatGPT, Stable Diffusion, and other groundbreaking AI applications.

Beyond celebrating technical advancements, The AI Revolution emphasizes the power of open collaboration. PyTorch has thrived thanks to a vibrant and engaged community, with contributions from over 3,500 individuals and 3,000 organizations, where contributors from academia, industry, and beyond have united to foster an ecosystem that nurtures innovation. The documentary illustrates how PyTorch’s evolution has been driven by a shared commitment to openness and accessibility in AI research.

A Note from Jen Shelby and the PyTorch Documentary

Jen Shelby, Author

My role in the creation of the PyTorch documentary began with securing funding from PyTorch’s founding members, ensuring the project had the necessary resources to bring its vision to life. I also led efforts to secure key interviewees and develop a cohesive set of questions to guide insightful discussions.

As with any documentary, this was a highly collaborative effort, and I brought my understanding of the PyTorch ecosystem, developer communities, AI practitioners, open-source contributors, and member organizations to shape a compelling and technically engaging narrative.

I collaborated closely in the final editing process, focusing on storytelling and impact to ensure a compelling narrative. The documentary premiered at the AI_Dev conference in Paris, with a simultaneous livestream in North America.

It is an honor to be part of such an impactful project, and I am proud to share the PyTorch story with you. The PyTorch community is not just shaping the present; it is actively shaping the future of AI.
